A big ole' .... well .... bar. Picture your prototypical Legion (or other fraternal club/bar) in a small town. Have that picture in your head? Good. Now turn up the lighting a tiny bit. Whoah, not that much! There, better. Okay, now you have Toivo's. Don't take this as a derision. It works. Toivo's is a large building that serves drinks and the exact gastro fare you'd expect. Every once in a while there's a band; maybe a DJ. No need to dress up. Drag your sorry butt back on Sunday morning for the buffet; it's actually not bad. Dude, it's a bar. People seem to like it.

We were at this restaurant for hamburger special night. The burgers and beer were good. We had fried cauliflower as an appetizer and it was delicious! Nice local place!

I had to stop here to avoid a crazy severe going on tornadic storm that was rushing through north central Minnesota. Thank goodness I found it too, I don't drive too well in pouring rain. Very friendly northern Mn atmosphere and bartender. She approached me instantly and told me she would give me happy hour prices even though the clock had just changed over. Insta-love right there. Both collage and pro football games were on, cheap booze (even after happy hour), and pull tabs. Classic dive bar greatness. I really don't know if I'll ever be needed to stop in Grand Rapids again, but if I do I know I'll stop here.

It's Friday night And the bar is hopping and a large group of hockey players from Blaine are about to arrive. I ordered the surf and turf special, my husband ordered the fish tacos and my daughter ordered the chicken bites from the kids meal. We also ordered the deep fried green beans. Everything was excellent and very reasonably priced. Large portions had us asking for a to-go box. Toivo's does a fantastic job of changing up the menus, adding a variety of options instead of the same-ole, same-ole.

A great local venue. One family runs the restaurant and the service is wonderful. Their meals are great, love the home made chips. They have a wonderful Sunday brunch.

We came here for a late lunch during a road trip that took us through Grand Rapids. We have two small children and my 3 year old brought in a strawberry milk and the waitress insisted on taking it away because outside drinks are not allowed - seriously, a 3 year old's milk? The food was blah and totally overpriced for what it was. One kid's meal was undercooked and the other burned. The $9 veggie burger with cheese has processed cheese and was a frozen veggie pattie and came in a basket. When it was time to go, we asked for a to go box for the left over tater tots and were given a paper bowl and a brown lunch Baggie. A big disappointment all around.

We were passing through town on our way to the cabin and decided to stop at Toivo's for dinner. After reading reviews on yelp, we were looking forward to some good burgers. Let's just say...two stars is generous. The service was good, the burgers were not. Over cooked and dry. My frickle burger had two sad frickles. I guess my expectations were too high.

A locally-owned business that gets it right. Great staff and consistently great food. Wed is $5 burger night which you can get as chicken breast for the same price. That's usually when I can be found there and every burger I've tried has been fabulous. Decent tap beer selection, lots of weekly events and specials. A place to keep an eye on, I think good things are in their future.

A terrific choice of foods and always good! The gluten-free fried sweet potatoes were the perfect treat for a friend on a strict diet. The Toivo burger was awesome, though it was big enough for the entire group. Down-to-earth, friendly staff. We have not been there during the evening, but have been told it's a BLAST!
